Homeowners can give their property a weathered look with a simple DIY technique.Property owners who are looking to finish off their kitchen by giving it a rustic look should try to expose brickwork, according to an expert.Julian Cassell, replying to a letter in the Guardian, stated that home improvement fans should take on-site professional advice first, however, if their home is pre 1950s then there is a good chance that brick resides under a layer of plaster."Post 1950, concrete block took over as the most common construction material for the inner leaf of cavity walls. A simple way to find out is to unscrew an electrical socket on the wall and look inside to see what the mounting box is fixed on to," he stated, advising that the power should be turned off at the consumer unit first.Mr Cassell went on to say that if brick is found, then the plaster can be chipped away at using a club hammer and bolster chisel, while a chipping hammer could also come in useful.Anyone carrying out home improvement work needs to be aware of the dangers of asbestos, according to Craig Phillips, a TV DIY expert.Posted by Helen Sykes
