Residents in Peterborough have been urged to make small energy efficiency savings around their homes before the government’s Green Deal comes into force towards the end of 2012.
Writing in the Peterborough Guardian, Sam Jones, business and environment project officer at Peterborough Environment City Trust, said there are simple measures everyone can take.
Having shorter showers, turning off appliances at the plug and not leaving them on stand-by, and wearing more layers rather than relying on central heating are just some of the ways people can help out the environment while also saving money on their electricity and gas bills.
Mr Jones said: "If everyone abided by these simple measures, it would make a difference. But to get the real big win we need to improve things like roof space insulation, cavity wall insulation and double glazing. Things that not only cut carbon emissions by making your home more efficient, but keep you warm, reduce your energy bills and save you money."
The Green Deal will allow homeowners to keep their double glazing costs down as loans will be available to cover the initial expense. The money will be paid back as people make savings on their energy bills.
