Entrance to property 'should reflect rest of home'

Property entrance hintsA lifestyle expert has advised how to get the best out of an entranceway to a property. The entrance hall of a home should give some kind of a hint as to the character of the rest of the property, according to one design expert.

Katharina Semling, a lifestyle consultant, claims that the space could give visitors, or prospective purchasers, an early impression about the rest of the house.

The space should be "bright, but homely", she said, which could be achieved through UPVC windows or double glazing, adding that the size and shape of the entranceway will determine what kind of lighting in appropriate.

Ms Semling said that homeowners should look to "play up" the beautiful aspects and "conceal things that are not so pretty".

She added: "Cleverly cover up problem zones. Long, narrow entryways, for example, can be made to look shorter and broader when mirrors are hung lengthwise instead of upright.

"Or work with colours: Vertical stripes can make low-ceiling entryways appear optically higher."

A recent study by Rockwool found that 78 per cent of homeowners are looking to make environmental improvements to their property.
