Energy-saving improvements 'help cut costs'

Energy-saving improvements slashed one family's billsOne family have shown how some green home improvements can help lower energy bills.

Installing new windows was one of the measures that helped one couple cut their energy costs, it has been reported.

Andrew and Emma Cook and their family have managed to reduce their heating bills by undertaking a series of energy-saving projects in the home, reports the Daily Telegraph.

One of the first things they did was to update the double glazed windows to triple glazed versions.

In addition, the family installed insulation, a digital thermostat, wood-burning fire and a new heating system.

Mr Cook told the news provider that when the family moved into their home in the Pendle Valley, their combined gas and electricity bills stood at £11,000.

Following their improvements, the bills are now £6,000 per year, despite the increase in fuel prices.

"We've more than halved our energy usage, but we've got around 100 more lights, electrical gadgets and a whole house heating system," Mr Cook commented.

The UK Green Buildings Council is currently calling on the government to impose higher council tax and stamp duty on people who fail to make their homes more energy efficient.
