Poorly-insulated households spent a collective £1.2bn over the odds during the recent cold snap, it has been estimatedBritish households could have saved a collective £1.2 billion in energy bills during the recent cold snap had their properties been more energy efficient. That is according to a new report from the consultancy Faith+Gould, which once again highlights the financial benefits of double glazing and good home insulation. The consultancy, which is part of the Atkins engineering group, estimates that the typical poorly-insulated household would have spent an additional £27 on their heating over the past two weeks alone. Furthermore, a collective £284 million extra was splashed out on keeping UK offices warm during what was one of the coldest winter periods in recent memory, the study also found. "As outside temperatures fall, the cold truth is that already inefficient buildings perform increasingly badly as heating systems struggle to maintain the indoor temperatures demanded of them," Faithful+Gould energy management expert Ellie Horwitch-Smith explained. She added that, while it may seem like a lot, the figure of £1.2 billion may even be on the "conservative side", given that millions of homes across the UK don't even have decent double glazing installed. Meanwhile, the Wetherspoons chain of pubs has reported a fall in sales as consumers stayed at home rather than ventured out during the cold snap. Posted by Matt Watts
