Energy efficient products 'should have reduced VAT rate'Homeowners should be able to take advantage of cheaper energy-efficient products.More energy-efficient products, such as cheap double glazing, should be eligible for a reduced five per cent VAT rate, according to an industry expert.

Politics.co.uk reported that Bill Bolsover, chairman of the Construction Products Association, told delegates at a recent conference that homeowners should be encouraged to do their bit for the environment by having access to cheaper products.

"No-one has ever been able to explain to me why, at a time when climate change is seen as such an important issue, we are charging VAT at five per cent on the energy we use, but the full 17.5 per cent on many of the products that actually help us save it," he continued.

Mr Bolsover went on to say that by doing this, it will be seen as evidence that the government wants to be true to the coalition agreement to be the "greenest government ever".

As well as improving a property's energy efficiency, double glazing can also improve its aesthetics, according to a spokesperson for Conservatory Outlet.
