It may be expensive to make energy-efficient home improvements but they can save money in the long-run, according to an expert on the environment.Fitting a home with energy-efficient features can be expensive, but the amount of money saved on bills and the benefits to the planet make at least some of them worthwhile, according to an environment expert.James Randerson, editor of the Guardian's environment website, wrote that he is currently renovating a Victorian terrace house and is attempting to improve its energy-saving credentials. He highlighted the fact that low-energy light bulbs are commonplace on today's supermarket shelves but these are only useful when the bulbs being replaced are traditional, incandescent versions.Mr Randerson's house has low-voltage halogen spotlights in the kitchen and bathrooms and he explained that there is no CFL alternative, only a few LED ones at around £25 each."Still, we can do better by adding the next tier of eco-measures (including double glazing, floor insulation, solar panels on the roof and a heat-recovery extractor fan in the kitchen and bathroom)," he added.Recently in Telford, a conservation officer told a homeowner that he is not permitted to install cheap double glazing into his property as it is in a conservation area and that he must instead opt for a more expensive alternative, the Shropshire Star reported.Posted by Mark Moore
