Billy Armstrong, Ulster Unionist social development spokesperson, told the Mid Ulster Mail that the recent cold weather will hit the pockets of many people hard.

"Unfortunately, once the bills come rolling in from home heating over this period, many people will get a bit of a shock," he said.

Mr Armstrong went on to say that home improvements, such as loft and cavity wall insulation and double glazing windows and doors, will save money and reduce emissions in the long-term.

"Energy efficiency measures are essential if we are to cut heating bills," he added.

Moneysupermarket.com recently advised homeowners to consider installing double glazing. The price comparison website said that people may be put off by the cost of installation but that, over the years, it will save money in household bills.
