The UK's minister for energy and climate change has said that the issue of efficiency has "never been so important".Improving the energy efficiency of homes in the UK has "never been so important", according to a government minister.Joan Ruddock, the minister for energy and climate change, made the claim after the unveiling of plans to expand the Carbon Emissions Reduction Target scheme and the launch of the Community Energy Saving Programme (CESP).The latter will see up to 100 community schemes established to improve the efficiency of 90,000 homes and deliver savings of around 2.9 million tonnes of carbon emissions by the end of 2012.Ms Ruddock said: "Community-level solutions are the key to fighting climate change and the roll-out of CESP later this year will teach us valuable lessons in how to provide help to every home in every street. "By providing the tools for change we are empowering the British people to play their role in tackling climate change."Friends of the Earth recently claimed that efforts to make the UK more efficient could create up to 70,000 new jobs.
