Energy efficiency 'begins at home'

Insulating your loft can dramatically reduce energy bills.Improving the UK’s "inefficient housing stock" is the best way towards an energy efficient nation, an expert has said.Tackling climate change must begin at home, according to a property and environment commentator.

Colin Butfield, chair of the Existing Homes Alliance and head of campaigns at the WWF (formerly World Wide Fund for Nature), told the Guardian that homes need to be targeted if climate change is to be tackled.

"We have extremely inefficient housing stock in the UK so we have a long way to go, especially when you look at the government's demanding carbon targets for 2050," he said.

Mr Butfield told the newspaper that a very clear government policy on how to retrofit the 26 million homes in the UK is required.

He suggested basic measures such as coating the outside of tower blocks with an insulated render to cut heat loss by around 15 per cent.

The average home owner can dramatically cut heat loss by installing double glazing and loft insulation, according to the Energy Saving Trust.
