Energy efficiency 'a priority to cut emissions and bills'

The government's efficiency plans have been praisedThe UK should focus on energy efficiency as a key way to cut both carbon emissions and utility bills, it has been claimed.Homeowners need to make energy efficiency their "number one priority" to help the reduction of carbon emissions and customer bills, according to an expert.

John Alker, spokesman for the UK Green Building Council, made the statement while commenting on the government's new white paper on tackling climate change through energy saving.

He claimed that while more could be done to support the commercial property sector, homeowners will benefit from the new pay-as-you-save scheme for the installation of insulation and double glazing.

"It is essential that we invest in a massive programme of energy efficiency in our homes and buildings," he explained.

"Such a scheme could secure up to £5 billion a year through the private sector to invest in energy efficiency improvements and create thousands of new jobs."

The government has estimated that around seven million homes would be eligible for its pay-as-you-save scheme.
