Efficiency drive 'could create jobs'

According to Friends of the Earth, the positions could be created if councils commit to cutting carbon emissions by adding the likes of double glazing and insulation to homes in their regions.

It is thought that roles for architects, builders, loft laggers and electricians could be created through the plans.

Andy Atkins, executive director of Friends of the Earth, claimed: "Local councils must play a big part in slashing the UK's carbon emissions to help avoid runaway climate change.

"With the economy in such a sorry state at the moment, our towns, cities and villages could really use a boost from new green jobs."

Recent figures from uSwitch.com highlighted how important energy efficiency could be in the future, as the average annual utilities bill in the UK could reach almost £5,000 by 2020.ADNFCR-2394-ID-19237884-ADNFCR
