The University of Edinburgh is cutting its emissions by installing double glazing in its 1960s buildings. The University of Edinburgh is fitting its 1960s buildings with double glazing and has challenged its students and staff to change their travel habits and lifestyles in order to cut their emissions by ten per cent.Energy use by the university has already been cut by 31 per cent over the last 19 years, despite the fact that it has trebled in size, the Guardian reported. The 1960s buildings are also being refitted with sensor-activated lighting and insulated cladding to improve their energy efficiency. According to the Energy Saving Trust, the average home's CO2 emissions can be cut by 720kg through the installation of double glazing and 610kg by installing cavity wall insulation. Now the uni is asking its 25,700 students and 10,400 members of staff to reconsider the number of flights they take a year, how much the use their cars and to think about other ways in which they can reduce their carbon footprints, the newspaper reported.Edinburgh has been awarded £339,000 by the Scottish government's Climate Change fund so that it can employ six members of staff for 16 months to study the institution's carbon emissions and how they can be reduced.Speaking to the newspaper, David Somervell, Edinburgh's sustainability adviser, said: "It's a short, sharp opportunity for us to harness the community's capacity for change."Written by Helen Sykes.
