Eco-friendly house scoops award

Eco-friendly houseAn environmentally-friendly house built by a Cumbrian entrepreneur has won a prestigious building award.

The Adaptahaus, built by Alan Dawson at Branthwaite in Cumbria, was heralded as the Best Technical Innovation at the Northern Building Excellence Awards. The property is made up of 50 prefabricated panels which were made in a factory and then erected on site.

The property, which featured on Channel 4’s Grand Designs, uses an air source heat pump, biomass boiler and solar panels to provide energy, and there is plenty of insulation to help stop heat from escaping.

Speaking to Cumbrian newspaper the News and Star, Mr Dawson said: "I''m very honoured to receive the award and hope this success will serve to make the Adaptahaus initiative more attractive to potential investors and public funding – especially with us being part of Britain’s Energy Coast."

Property shows such as Grand Designs have helped encourage more people to consider the environment when constructing and making alterations to properties. Measures such as reducing a building’s carbon footprint by using local materials and increasing its energy efficiency through the use of double glazing windows have become far more commonplace.
