People are being advised that a simple but effective way of improving energy efficiency is ensuring all windows and external doors, such as cheap patio doors, are draught-proofed.Homeowners are being advised that they can take simple steps to make their homes more energy efficient, such as draught-proofing all windows and external doors, including all double glazing windows and cheap patio doors. In his weekly building column in the Telegraph, Jeff Howell writes that this simple measure can be achieved using a self-adhesive draught strip. He stresses that homeowners must be meticulous when applying this and that they could experience a "big difference" in their comfort levels and energy bills. The building and DIY expert went on to recommend that those with suspended timber downstairs floors put in under-floor insulation.According to the Energy Saving Trust, around half of a typical home's heat loss is through the walls and the loft.It recommends installing double glazing as this cuts heat loss through windows by half, can reduce energy bills by around £135 a year and save around 720kg of carbon dioxide per annum.Posted by Mark Moore
