Double glazing to be 'increasing focus' of Carbon Emissions Reduction Target

Insulation such as double glazing is becoming an increasing focus of the governmentDouble glazing and other forms of insulation are to become the focus of the Carbon Emissions Reduction Target, according to the department of energy and climate change. The government's Carbon Emissions Reduction Target (CERT) will focus "increasingly on insulation", such as double glazing windows, according to under secretary of state for the department of energy and climate change.

In a speech to a forum of the National Right to Fuel Campaign, MP David Kidney said that since 2002, through CERT, more than six million households have received help with energy saving measures, such as installing double glazing.

He said increased focus on insulation and double glazing will help to achieve the prime minister's commitment to insulate six million homes by the end of 2011.

Mr Kidney said strong progress has also been made in reducing the number of households that are in fuel poverty, but he said that reducing this further has become a challenge due to ever-increasing energy bills.

The MP said that the government's ambition remains to eradicate fuel poverty by 2016.

Earlier this week, the government announced that smart meters are to be installed in all homes in the UK by 2020. These will allow home owners to view their energy usage on an easy-to-read digital display.
