Earlier this week, the Department of Energy and Climate Change announced the Green Deal, which will include boosting the number of workers in the energy efficiency sector by creating 100,000 jobs, to advise homeowners on how to maximise their house's eco credentials.

Daniel Green, chief executive of HomeSun, welcomed the announcement, but urged the government to do more to highlight the short-term benefits of energy-efficient properties.

Mr Green explained: "[People may] worry that they won't get the returns that more efficiency will give them, instantly. People are very concerned about their initial outlay, even though the long-term benefit will be substantial."

Last week, eco-retailer Nigel Berman, founder of nigelsecostore.com, said that increasing numbers of homeowners are considering improving their properties, by taking steps such as seeking double glazing quotes and installing new insulation.
