Stephen Graham from Lancashire's Energy Saving Trust advice centre told BBC News that double glazing – with an energy rating of C – could save around £130 on heating bills annually, compared to single-glazed windows.

As well as the energy-saving benefits, homeowners will also find that cheap UPVc windows reduce outside noise and help problematic condensation in properties.

Mr Graham also advised looking into installing cavity wall insulation, explaining: "Around 33 per cent of the heat lost in your home is through the walls, so insulating them can be one of the most cost-effective way to save energy in the home."

The Energy Savings Trust is an impartial organisation, which aims to educate the public about making energy-saving changes in their lives, in order to reduce carbon emissions.
