Double glazing 'pays for itself in six years'Home improvements such as insulation and double glazing save so much money in energy bills that they pay for themselves in around six years, according to Which?Even installing cheap double glazing can make a big dent in homeowners' pockets, but it is worthwhile as it will have paid for itself in the amount saved on energy bills within six years, according to Which?

Consumer champion Which? claims that energy bills for a poorly-insulated home could increase by 35 per cent by 2020 taking the bill of a detached house to around £4,000.

A three-bed semi-detached property that does not have double glazing or insulation could see its energy bills rise to over £2,600 in the next decade.

Which? recommends homeowners "future-proof" their properties by investing in features such as cheap double glazing, a new boiler and wall insulation and said that the cost of all of these features would be around £5,350, which will pay for themselves after six years.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, double glazing alone can save the average home around £135 a year in energy bills.
