Scott Byrom, utilities manager at moneysupermarket.com said that the recent cold spell of weather has added considerably to the cost of utility bills among homeowners and businesses alike.

"This recent cold snap couldn't have come at a worse time for many bill payers, especially for the five million people currently living in fuel poverty," he said.

Mr Byrom went on to say that a quarterly energy bill for between £500 and £600 could be landing on the door mats of many UK homeowners.

The website said that there are many ways in which people can minimise gas and electricity bills, including turning the thermostat down and installing double glazing.

According to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, installing double glazing makes a "significant contribution" to the energy efficiency of a home.
