Double glazing helps school shrink energy use

Thomas Alleyne's High School wanted to become more sustainable and asked the Carbon Trust for help.

As a result of the Carbon Trust's recommendations, the school has reduced its energy bill by £11,267 a year and cut its annual carbon dioxide emissions by 114 tonnes.

The school is gradually replacing all of its windows with double glazing and swapping fluorescent light bulbs with more energy efficient ones.

Site manager Ian Mirams explained that the Carbon Trust's recommendations were mostly common sense.

"But it got us thinking about some areas we hadn't considered, and having a view of the short pay-back periods on improvements gave us the nudge we needed to get started," he said.
