Double glazing helps new building gain 'very good' energy saving rating

Double glazing helps new building gain 'very good' energy saving rating Double glazing windows helped the design of a building now under construction in London to receive a 'very good' rating in an environmental assessment. The double glazing windows that are being used in a building currently under construction in Islington, London, helped the property to achieve a 'very good' rating under the BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM).

BREEAM is the most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings and the design of Allford Hall Monagham Morris's Angel building incorporated many eco-friendly features to ensure it was rated well under the method, according to Building Design.

The five-storey Angel building achieves thermal insulation partly by a 16mm-wide air-filled cavity in its double glazing windows.

Allford Hall Monagham Morris's associate director Wade Scaramucci told the architect's newspaper: "We wanted as much natural daylight as possible."

"We also wanted bigger windows to see the mature trees on all sides," he added.

Last year, interior designer Naoimh Tuohy wrote on the website Herald.ie that installing a lot of double glazing windows allows a room to be bathed in sunlight but prevents heat from being lost.
