Michael Hanlon, a science and technology journalist at the Daily Mail, said that the production of double glazing, which includes making the cheap UPVC windows and the glass, emits carbon.

However, he goes on to say that this is a one-off environmental cost that is offset by the amount of CO2 the windows save.

He wrote that, for a typical household, over its 20-year lifetime a set of double glazing will save several tonnes of carbon dioxide.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, by trapping air between two pains of glass, double glazing creates an insulating barrier that reduces heat loss.

It said that this can cut heat loss through windows by half and save the average household around £135 a year on heating bills.

The trust also recommends filling gaps around windows and doors to decrease the amount of cold air entering the home and the amount of warm air escaping.
