Double glazing energy savings 'should be easier to monitor'

Visual displays on smart meters could confirm how much energy your double glazed windows are saving you.Smart meters, which show how much energy is used, would benefit greatly from clear visual displays, it has been suggested.Smart metres in homes should have clear visual displays so that homeowners can see the amount of energy their double glazing and other eco-friendly home improvements are saving them, according to the Energy Retail Association (ERA).

Peter Jenkins, head of communications and public affairs at ERA, said: "Providing customers with detailed, accessible information on the energy they are using has always been the cornerstone of the energy industry's approach to smart metering."

With these easy-to-read displays, homeowners would be able to see how much energy they are using in comparison to how much they used before they made eco-friendly alterations to their homes, such as installing UPVC windows.

Mr Jenkins said he firmly believes that energy companies should not be restricted to providing a "one size fits all" device over the next 12 years and should be allowed to offer customers precisely the kind of display they would find most useful.

The Energy Saving Trust said it believed smart meters with visual displays will be "essential in ensuring the potential energy saving benefits to consumers materialise".
