Exaggerated estimations of the cost of making environmentally-friendly home improvements will put people off making changes and helping the battle against CO2 emissions, according to whatgreenhome.com.The chairman of the Committee on Climate Change's false estimations are putting people off making green home improvements, such as fitting double glazing, according to whatgreenhome.com.Gordon Miller, founder of whatgreenhome.com, said that the chairman was exaggerating when, earlier this week, he asserted that making a home fully energy efficient could cost up to £15,000."I'm not too sure why he is banging on about £10,000 to £15,000 to green your home," said Mr Miller."You can even do stuff like insulate your house and that won't cost you £10,000 to £15,000. Putting an energy efficient boiler in is only going to cost you £2,000 to £3,000," he added.Cheap UPVC windows can be found by seeking double glazing quotes online and, once installed, double glazing can reduce heat loss through windows by a half, therefore reducing energy bills and CO2 emissions.Mr Miller recommended that the first simple steps people should be taking to reduce their carbon footprint include switching off electrical items rather than leaving them on standby, turning down thermostats by one degree and fitting draught excluders to windows and doors.Written by Helen Sykes.
