Double glazing chimney channels heat from conservatories to other rooms

A special double glazing chimney has been developed to channel heat around propertiesExcess heat in conservatories with double glazing can be used to increase the temperature elsewhere in a property thanks to a new invention.Double glazing prevents heat loss but can also cause temperatures to rise greatly in conservatories, however, one company is turning this problem into an opportunity.

Cambridge-based renewable energy specialists theEnergyCrowd have discovered that warm air from a conservatory can be extracted by a solar chimney fitted to the side of a house.

This air can then be channelled, via the loft space, to the rest of the property.

The chimney, which is also made of double glazing, collects additional solar energy and can reach temperatures of up to 40 degrees C, even during winter months.

Peter Kruger, the engineer who founded theEnergyCrowd.com, said: "It has been good to see this system cutting energy use at a time when the recent big freeze was doubling household fuel consumption."

Ian Chisholm, deputy chief executive at the Glass and Glazing Federation, is soon to hold a seminar on the environmental benefits of double glazing windows at Ecobuild - the world's biggest event for sustainable design.
