Installing double glazing could ease the pain of having to pay for planned upgrades to the UK's energy infrastructure. The growing importance of double glazing in the home has once again been highlighted as consumers are warned that hundreds of pounds are likely to be added on to the average energy bill in order to pay for much-need upgrades to the UK power infrastructure. This week, the energy industry regulator Ofgem announced an additional £1 billion funding package for the upgrade work, which would see renewable power schemes better-connected to the main National Grid. However, while acknowledging that such investment is "crucial" to Britain's future, the price comparison site uSwitch.com has warned consumers to prepare themselves for the fact that such work is highly likely to be partly funded through their bills. "The average household energy bill today is £1,239 a year and the additional cost of investment alone is expected to add £548 a year onto our bills," the site's energy expert Will Marples said."Ongoing pricing trends coupled with this investment could see household energy bills hit as high as £4,733 a year by 2020, nearly four times higher than they are today."This warning comes soon after one in three of those households polled by Which? revealed that they are wary that they may struggle to pay their winter gas bills.
