DIY fans need to be aware of asbestos dangersOne person dies every five hours because of asbestos-related diseases.People undertaking home improvement work in their kitchen or bathroom need to be aware of the dangers of asbestos, according to two experts.

Craig Phillips, Big Brother champion and TV DIY presenter, said that property owners need to be aware of where the cancer-related material could potentially be found.

"There are a number of places it is common, even houses built as late as 1989 were still using the material. It is commonly found in old floor tiles, toilet systems, textured ceilings, cement roof boards, linings, and even boiler cupboards," he added.

Dame Helena Shovelton, chief executive of the British Lung Foundation, told home improvement fans that asbestos is something that was so commonly used in the UK that it has taken years for people to realise how dangerous it can be.

Their comments came after the foundation revealed that around 65 per cent of British homeowners are not confident of identifying asbestos in their own homes.
