DIY building by homeowners is a "false economy" as hidden risks such as subsidence can incur greater costs, according to research by an insurance company.Penny-pinching homeowners are putting themselves at risk by not using qualified trades-people and tackling major building projects themselves, according to new research.Lloyds TSB Insurance has revealed that a million homeowners have taken on serious structural work 'single-handed' in the last year and more than two-thirds (66 per cent) admit that they did not follow official building guidelines on the job.The insurer warned that some projects entail risks that homeowners are not aware of, such as subsidence caused by conservatories with shallow foundations.According to the Association of British Insurers, geological hazards, such as subsidence, cost at least £300 million in insurance payouts in an average year. Lloyds also found that more than three-quarters (81 per cent) of homeowners have risked breaching energy efficiency regulations by not checking if building materials reach the right standard. Kevin Brown, senior technical claims manager for Lloyds TSB Insurance, said: "It's vital to consult the experts when it comes to making any major changes and ensure that you follow all the official guidelines. If you don't do this it can end up being a false economy."Written by Daniel Brown.
