Cheryl Gillespie told Homes-extra.ca readers that the headboard is the natural central element in a bedroom, so homeowners should "make a statement" in its design.

She said: "The headboard leads the design team. It sets the tone and the mood of the room. For example, if you want a modern, masculine space ... [look] for a pair of old steel shipping container doors as a headboard."

Alternatively, Ms Gillespie suggested that a rustic-feel could be established by creating a unique feature using twisted and entwined branches, while an Adirondack atmosphere can be established by upholstering the area.

Last week, the Daily Mail reported that velvet is an excellent addition in the home, to create a luxurious and welcoming style.

Adding touches of the fabric through cushions and blankets can incorporate colour and texture.
