Countryside home extensions 'should be controlled'

Calls have been made for more controls on the redevelopment of rural homes People who live in the country should think carefully before extending their homes, it has been suggested.Those who live in the countryside should be aware of the impact that having a conservatory or other extension added to their property can have on its price, it has been claimed.

Kate Gordon, planning team member for the Campaign to Protect Rural England, has claimed such developments should be monitored as major work could price some people out of being able to buy homes in rural areas.

She explained: "We are seeing modest homes being extended to the extent that where they were once an affordable three-bedroom family home, they become five-bedroom, five-bathroom unaffordable mansions due to extensions."

While not suggesting that people should rule out getting conservatory quotes or making other changes to their home, Ms Gordon concluded that some control would help to ensure there is a range of property available in such areas.

A recent report by Knight Frank found that the average country property has fallen in price by around 20 per cent in the past year. ADNFCR-2394-ID-19177128-ADNFCR
