Consumer Focus calls on energy providers to put an end to fuel poverty

Double glazing could alleviate fuel povertyConsumer Focus is calling for energy companies to cut their prices, which could give homeowners spare cash to spend on heat-saving cheap double glazing.

Installing cheap double glazing cuts energy bills and is one way of reducing fuel poverty, but Consumer Focus is calling on the energy providers themselves to put an end to this problem.

British Gas announced recently that its residential profits for last year were £595 million, up from £376 million in 2008.

In response to this announcement, Consumer Focus is calling for immediate and significant price cuts across the energy market.

Philip Cullum, deputy chief executive at Consumer Focus, said: "Energy companies have no excuses for not cutting bills for their customers.

"It is clear the problems in the energy market are profound and that it requires fundamental reform."

He went on to say that energy companies have taken advantage of this very cold winter, regardless of the fact that more than six million households in Britain are living in fuel poverty.

Those living in certain council houses across the UK will soon benefit from reduced energy bills, as their local authorities - such as Gateshead Council - have agreed to fit cheap double glazing windows, which reduce heat loss.
