Conservatories 'could be affected by planning issues'

Planning permission may be needed for some conservatory projects, it has been suggested Homeowners should consider whether they need to apply for planning permission before having a conservatory added to their property, it has been claimed.Adding a conservatory to a home may infringe on a property owner's permitted development rights, according to an expert.

Jason Orme, editor of Homebuilding & Renovating Magazine, has claimed that while such projects are counted as an extension under regulations, those considering conservatory quotes must work out the space they are entitled to add.

He warned that each scenario is subject to its own "individual circumstances", so homeowners must be prepared to discover whether they are affected.

"In general terms, if they haven't extended their house in other ways, then adding on an extension wouldn't need planning permission, but it is a question of how big the conservatory is and how they may have extended the house in the past," he added.

Ratepeople.com recently suggested that a conservatory could increase the value of a property by around five per cent.
