Called Fife Cares, the service run by the region's community safety partnership visited almost 3,000 homes in 2008-09 to provide general safety advice and assistance.

Advisers on the scheme also provided minor repairs at homes during the visits, including the installation of a range of security products.

George Kay, the area's committee chair councillor, said: "Last year the service which offers free installation of safety and security equipment provided more than 700 smoke alarms, 231 child safety gates, and 145 fireguards.

"More than 700 homes also received home security equipment, including mortise locks, security bolts and security lights."

Recent figures from Gocompare.com claimed that a third of Brits have not bought security products in the past 12 months.ADNFCR-2394-ID-19212508-ADNFCR
