New funding has been made available to communities keen on developing low carbon schemes, such as for home improvements.Communities are being encouraged to apply for a share of £10 million of funding to develop low carbon schemes, such as for funding home improvements. The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has indicated that the funds could be used to cut down on home carbon emissions, perhaps by launching schemes to offer cheaper double glazing.By 2050, the government is keen on cutting emissions by 80 per cent, with around a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions coming from heating, lighting and power appliances in the home.Energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband explained that the challenge is an opportunity for communities to take a lead role in working towards this goal.He said: "The UK has the most ambitious emissions reduction commitments in the world and projects like this will develop the policies we need to be successful."Recent figures from DECC indicated that the UK has reduced its emissions by 21 per cent compared to 1990 levels already, with emissions having fallen in 335 out of the 434 local authorities in the UK.Written by Sarah Gower
