Jeff Howell told Daily Telegraph readers that condensation can occur when new windows are fitted as the improved insulation of the window cuts draughts that may have existed with previous glazing.

Mr Howell said: "Bedrooms are most likely to be affected by condensation due to the moisture given off by human respiration and perspiration, estimated to be about one litre per person per night."

He added that both heating and through-ventilation are important to keep condensation at bay.

Windows with trickle vents can help but homeowners should continue to monitor any water build-up on their panes in case this is not sufficient, Mr Howell advised.
