Norwich City Council is defending its scheme to install cheap uPVC windows in local homes.Installing cheap uPVC windows allows homeowners to conserve the energy used by their homes in a cost-effective manner, it has been claimed.According to Norwich City Council, putting in the windows can help householders to save money in the difficult economic climate. The body is planning to replace 1,608 windows in the local area by the end of March, Advertiser 24 reports.Responding to criticism of the windows from Norwich Society, which exists to promote the best architectural design and planning in the city, the council said that the initiative simply aims to provide better homes that are easier to heat, according to the news provider. The publication reported comments from council leader Steve Mophew, who described the criticisms as "unhelpful"."It's absolutely clear that the tenants of our council houses want their windows replaced and we are moving heaven and earth to do it as quickly as possible," he said.Earlier this week, a Friends of the Earth survey found that the British public would be in favour of a stronger commitment from the government to improve home energy saving.Posted by Laura Rathbone
