Energy-efficient DIY jobs can save money in the long run, both by decreasing energy bills and adding to the value of the home, Nick Williams wrote for sayeducate.com.

A major way to reduce the costs of running a household is to insulate roof space, Mr Williams said, as it is estimated that 25 per cent of the home's heat is lost through the roof.

Replacing doors and installing cheap UPVc windows can also help to increase the energy efficiency of a property, with windows and doors being responsible for around ten per cent of the heat lost from a building.

He explained: "The amount of heat a door can retain is measured by U values (the measure of heat loss through a structure) ... The difference made to heating bills over a long period of time by installing low U value products is huge."

Last week, chief executive of HomeSun Daniel Green said that the government should do more to incentivise people to make eco-friendly changes to their home, such as adding cheap UPVc windows or cavity wall insulation.
