At least one in ten new homes in the UK fail to meet the legal standards of energy efficiency set out by the government, figures have shown, perhaps through lacking cheap double glazing. At least ten per cent of new homes in the UK, perhaps due to lacking cheap double glazing, fail to meet the energy efficiency requirements set out by the government, figures have shown.By not meeting these targets, homeowners are being subjected to either higher energy bills or uncomfortably cold living conditions. The figures, revealed by the Guardian, claim that at least 30,000 of the 300,000 homes built since April 2008 do not meet standards required to gain a compulsory Energy Performance Certificate (EPC).Andrew Warren, director of the Association for the Conservation of Energy, said: "With energy costs mounting - never mind the environmental issues - it's perfectly respectable to expect that buildings meet the minimum legal standards for energy efficiency."One way of improving the energy efficiency of a property is to update its windows.Replacing single glazed windows with cheap double glazing can reduce heat loss by half and lower energy bills by £135, according to the Energy Saving Trust.Posted by James Hall
