Housing charity Shelter and the Royal Institute of British Architects commissioned the survey, which revealed that just eight per cent made home improvements in the hope of increasing their property's value.

Around one in ten homeowners (12 per cent) said they sought to develop their property to make it more environmentally friendly or energy efficient.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, installing cheap double glazing is a good way of improving the energy efficiency of a home as it can reduce heat-loss through windows by 50 per cent.

The research found that kitchen extensions were the most popular home improvement, but cheap conservatories were also desirable, with 12 per cent or Brits saying they would like to build one of these.
