Cheap double glazing has been used in the zero-energy buildingCheap double glazing is just one of the eco-friendly features that have has been used in a Tasmanian zero-energy building.Double glazing has been used in a AUD$3 million (£1.71 million) health centre that is predicted to become the Tasmanian government's first zero-energy building.

The new environmentally-friendly community health centre in Bruny Island, Tasmania opened recently and features a solar photovoltaic system that harnesses the sun's energy to provide some of the centre's power.

Other eco-friendly features of the building include a 10 kW wind turbine and a solar hot water system.

The centre's double glazing windows and high levels of insulation will enable it to retain more heat and therefore reduce energy bills.

Lara Giddings, Tasmanian health minister said: "[The] key criterion for the design of the new facility was to meet the Tasmanian government's aim for a 60 per cent reduction in energy consumption across all departments by 2050."

Meanwhile in the UK, owners of council houses in the London borough of Havering recently learned that they are to get cheap double glazing installed in their homes, thanks to £9 million of Decent Homes funding.
