It is important that people are encouraged to install cheap double glazing doors rather than punished for failing to do so, an organisation has claimed.

Vernon Pethard, founder of newhomesforsale.co.uk, has highlighted the fact that government proposals that could see poorly-insulated homes taxed are "more stick than carrot".

He said that a higher stamp duty rate on older and poorly insulated homes will simply deter people from buying one, rather than encouraging the purchase of the property and the installation of cheap double glazing doors.

In addition, he suggested that older homes may not be able to be bought fully up-to-date in a way comparable with new builds on the market, which would leave this penalty in place permanently.

Mr Pethard said: "These measures may result in more people choosing new [homes] because in addition to being greener, new homes are more economical to own."

Earlier this year, the Green Investment Bank commission made several proposes for financing the government's climate change obligations, including boosting the energy efficiency of the UK's existing housing stock.ADNFCR-2394-ID-19905194-ADNFCR
