Andrew Leech, director of the National Home Improvement Council, said people who hoped to cut costs by carrying out major renovations themselves did so at the risk of sacrificing standards and breaching regulations.

"My firm advice would be if you're doing anything more than decorating or repainting the property then you need to call a professional in to look at what you want to do, to give you advice … and then to carry it forward from there," he said.

Mr Leech said that professionals would also make sure homeowners get the right planning permissions and the "right sort of strategy in place".

His comments follow research published earlier today, which said that nearly a third of British homeowners who carried out major improvements on their property in the last 12 months, such as installing their own double glazing, did so without the help of professional tradesmen.
