Installing double glazing and other insulation could help to keep properties warm this winter, according to Age Concern and Help the Aged.Age Concern and Help the Aged have advised homeowners to install double glazing and other forms of insulation to ensure they stay warm and well this winter.Andrew Harrop, head of policy at the two charities said that with temperatures set to drop below zero in many parts of the UK, vulnerable older people need to take precautions to stay warm and healthy."For older people, protection against the cold is vital. Last winter's cold snap sent excess winter mortality to a ten-year high, with around three quarters of excess winter deaths recorded among people aged 75 or over," he explained.Mr Harrop said that around 2.5 million older people are currently living in fuel poverty and will be struggling with their bills this winter. The charities advised people to fit cheap UPVc windows if they can afford it as it cuts heat loss and energy bills. They added that homeowners should also enquire whether they are eligible to get a Warm Front grant, which helps to pay for energy-efficient home improvements such as cavity wall insulation and draft proofing.Posted by Helen Sykes.
