Homeowners and communities that install more eco-friendly electricity and heating systems that complement their double glazing will be able to claim payments for the low-carbon energy they produce. From April 1st, homeowners that install systems which produce green energy will be able to claim financial rewards. Energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband announced the scheme today (February 1st).It is designed to bring about a significant increase in the amount of green energy produced locally through apparatus such as small wind turbines and solar panels.A homeowner that installs a typical 2.5kW, well-sited solar panel could be rewarded with up to £900, as well as saving around £140 a year on their electricity bills."The feed-in tariff will change the way householders and communities think about their future energy needs, making the payback for investment far shorter than in the past," said Mr Miliband.Energy-saving features such as double glazing pay for themselves within around six years, as well as saving money in the long-run, consumer champion Which? said in December.Posted by Rob Elliott
