Under its new scheme, the local authority is offering companies in the area the chance to get up to 70 per cent off the cost of installing measures including double glazing, insulation and solar panels.

According to the Journal, full details of the plans will be officially launched later this month.

Councillor Frank Lott, the cabinet member for economy and employment, told the newspaper: "This initiative is about helping our town centres in the short to medium term - providing the financial support they need to make their businesses more energy efficient, so they cut their energy costs."

The Federation of Master Builders recently claimed that the government needs to publish a plan of action on how it intends to make all homes across the UK more energy efficient.
