The research by Ratedpeople.com found that Brits collectively pay £350 million a year on correcting mistakes made during home improvement work, including projects such as installing bathroom and kitchens.

It was found that the 12 million homeowners who attempt such work themselves pay on average £484 to fix their blunders.

Ottokar Rosenberger, sales and marketing director of Ratedpeople.com, said: "There is always a risk when attempting DIY jobs that something could go wrong and to add £484 to the bill, is surely reason enough to hire a tradesman to do the work."

Recent figures from Saga Home Insurance found that one in four people over 50 employ tradesmen to carry out renovation work on their properties.
