Brits want 'stronger' energy saving commitments from ministers

Brits want 'stronger' energy saving commitments from ministersThe British public would support a stronger commitment from the government to improve home energy saving, such as funding the installation of double glazing and other commitments, according to a new survey. The British public wants the government to go further with proposals to enhance home energy efficiency, perhaps to complement double glazing quotes, research shows.

Two-thirds of the population believe that the government's feed-in tariff proposals should go further to encourage home micro-generation of renewable energy, according to a Friends of the Earth (FoE) survey.

Under the feed-in scheme, details of which are expected within the next few days, the government would encourage homeowners and businesses to install energy systems by offering them a premium rate for excess electricity produced.

Seven in ten (71 per cent) of consumers would consider installing green energy systems, such as when they install double glazing, if they were given a large enough cash incentive.

Commenting on the findings, FoE executive director Andy Atkins explained that there is overwhelming public support for the government to "think big" when it comes to renewables.

He explained: "This will help tackle climate change, create new jobs and businesses and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.

"The recent freezing weather and concerns about future energy supplies have powerfully made the case for generating more of our energy at a local level."

His comments come after the Department of Energy and Climate Change signed a new agreement with the United Arab Emirates Masdar Institute to research ways to promote new renewable technology across the country.
