Brits 'lack home improvement knowledge'

Brits are seeking professional help for home improvements, it has been suggestedTwo out of five property owners in the UK lack home improvement skills, according to research.New research has revealed that many property owners in the UK do not have the skills to carry out major home improvements.

The study by WD-40 found that 40 per cent of people do not have the ability to carry out more than basic tasks such as painting, meaning they may choose to seek quotes for work involving UPVC windows or extensions.

It also found that the UK is spending over £21.5 million a year on hiring professionals to carry out renovation work or other projects on their homes.

David Whittome, WD-40 marketing director, said attitudes to home improvement have changed.

"Traditionally, men are loathe to call in a professional, as they always viewed it as an affront to their manhood. However, attitudes have shifted and they would now prefer to hire someone than have a go themselves and risk making a hash of it, which can be costly," he explained.

Research by Halifax recently suggested that energy saving measures offer the best return on investment of any home improvement work.
