A petition for the government to introduce a double glazing scrappage scheme gained over 3,270 signatures, as a boiler scrappage scheme to improve the energy efficiency of UK homes was launched yesterday. As the government introduced the boiler scrappage scheme yesterday (January 5th) a similar scheme for double glazed windows could be a step closer as a petition to Number 10 reached 3,270 signatures.Up to 125,000 households are to benefit from the boiler scrappage scheme, which helps people to replace their old energy-inefficient boiler with newer, fuel-efficient heating systems.Households that take part can save between £200 and £235 a year on fuel bills while also cutting their carbon emissions. Those with a G-rated boiler can apply to the Energy Saving Trust who will assess whether the boiler is eligible.Homeowners with eligible boilers will get a £400 voucher which can be redeemed when buying a new A-rated boiler or a renewable heating system, such as a heat pump.Meanwhile, the Glass and Glazing Federation is encouraging people to sign its petition for a similar scheme that would see old windows replaced with double glazing windows. The deadline for signing the online petition is March 24th 2010.
